An exceptional George I period
walnut longcase clock of month duration by Peter King, Long Acre,
London, circa 1710 - 1720.
The walnut case is of the
finest proportions, made using beautifully figured veneers of remarkable
quality.
The pull forward hood is
flanked by turned columns with brass capitals and has finely carved
walnut sound frets to the front and sides.
Within the long moulded trunk
door there is a central gilt brass lenticle.
The square brass dial is of
elegant design with crown and cherub spandrel mounts in the corners and
a matted and engraved dial centre, with calendar and subsidiary seconds
zone.
The silvered chapter ring has
bold Roman numerals and an outer minute circle with Arabic numerals at
five minute intervals.
The winding holes are ringed
and there is an aperture above VI indicating the day of the month,
surrounded by engraving. The dial is also engraved on the back plate at
III, VI, IX and XII.
The blued steel hands are finely wrought and pierced.
The substantial, 5 pillar, month duration movement is
of the finest quality, striking the hours on a single bell, employing a
count-wheel striking mechanism mounted on the outside of the backplate.
The movement is complete with it original brass cased
weights and pendulum.
