A fine quality flame mahogany 8 day longcase clock by Kitchen & Lloyd of Nantwich c.1780.

Case

The beautifully proportioned case of the highest quality with choice flame mahogany veneers employed throughout. The elegant boxed swan-neck pediment hood surmounted with three cast brass finials with the original gilt decorated verre eglomise panels beneath. Detailed dental mouldings to the swan-necks, with finely carved paterae. The ogee moulded hood door flanked by turned and crisply reeded columns terminating with brass capitals. The beautifully figured book matched flame mahogany moulded edge trunk door with shaped top, flanked by reeded quarter columns and brass capitals. The base with canted corner and complex stepped mouldings, with additional decorative brickwork to the corners, all set on four ogee bracket feet. The original case brassware throughout, with the original lock and key to the trunk door.

Dial

The beautifully executed arched japanned dial, with Roman numeral chapter ring and outer Arabic numeral markings, with subsidiary seconds dial, date zone and revolving phases of the moon to arch with opposing scenes depicting a rural landscape and a blue background sky with gilded stars and a shooting star. The early japanned dial decorated with raised gilt gesso and painted corner spandrels, signed to the arch Kitchen & Lloyd Nantwich.

Movement

The fully restored fine quality eight day duration movement, united by four knopped pillars and rack striking the hours on a single bell with geared moonphase drive.

The original cast iron weights and brass faced pendulum.
