A high quality, Sheraton Revival, Westminster chiming longcase / grandfather clock by S Smith and Son, 9 Strand, London, circa 1880.
Case
The impressive tulipwood crossbanded satinwood, mahogany and marquetry case of excellent colour and patination.
The hood with fluted columns, with turned wooded capitals and turned wooden finials surmounted by a hemispherical crest decorated with a lyre against a sunburst, inlaid with satinwood floral cartouches, stringing and crossbanding, beneath an inlaid frieze with matching decoration to the sides with silk lined scrolled wooden sound frets beneath.
The shaped long trunk door with moulded edge and inlaid with finely detailed marquetry cornucopia and bell husk swags, highlighted with pen and ink detailing.
The trunk door flanked by inlaid scrolled satinwood and mahogany mouldings.
The stepped base flanked with turned wooded columns, surmounted by wooden finials and finely executed geometric inlay to the central mahogany, tulipwood and satinwood base panel, surmounted on turned wooded feet.
The original lock keys and hinges to the hood and trunk door.
The case solid mahogany case sides, of the highest quality.
The case is made to a very high standard using the very best materials and is in excellent condition.
Dial
The square brass dial with silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring and subsidiary silvered seconds zone,
The beautifully matted dial centre with an applied silvered cartouche signed S Smith & Son, 9 Strand, London.
Finely cast brass spandrels to the corners of the dial.
Chime / Chime silent selector to the right of the numeral III.
A very crisp and well executed dial of the highest quality.
Movement
The fully restored high quality eight day duration triple weight movement striking the quarters hours on 4 curled gongs, playing graduating Westminster chimes on each quarter, finishing with full Westminster chime on the hour and striking the hours on a further blued steel gong.
The substantial movement having thick brass plates and large knopped plate pillars, all manufactured to the highest possible level..
Weights and pendulum
The original brass cased weights and heavy brass bob pendulum with steel rod and knurled regulation nut.
Hands
Finely fretted blued steel hands.

S. Smith & Son was founded in 1851 by the jeweller and watchmaker Samuel Smith. In addition to the wide range of watches and clocks for private customers, Smith’s also built reliable chronometers which made the firm a supplier to the Admiralty. Later the firm evolved into a large manufacturing company that had its own research laboratories to develop the production of automobile and aircraft instruments.
